FLOOD PROTECTION
ORINI RIVER WORK [by telegraph—own correspondent] WHAKATANE, Tuesday Advice has been received from tho Minister of Lands, the Hon. F. Langstone, regarding tho construction of tho proposed flood gate near the mouth of the Orini River dredge cut. Land surveys aro being undertaken and an order has been placed overseas for tho necessary piling material, which it is anticipated will be received in March, 1938. Excavation for the gate will bo commenced, so that as soon as the piling material is available tho construction of tho gate can proceed. On the completion of tho work it is hoped to give a better system of drainage to approximately 1000 -acres of flax and titrec country in the upper reaches of the river, as well as to alleviate the serious flooding which occurs near the mouth. It is also evident that by keeping the water in the cut at a low level by means of tho flood gate the settlers in the whole of the Orini Basin will benefit by tlio additional freeboard, created..
