GENERAL LUDENDORFF
SURGICAL OPERATION CONDITION NOW CRITICAL (Received November 30. 5.5 p.m.) BERLIN. Nov. 29 General Erich von Ludendorff, former wartime German leader, re-, eently 'underwent an operation for a tumour. His condition is critical. General von Ludendorff is 72 years old. German historians give him the credit of having been "the brains behind Hindenburg" in Germany's spectacular successes on her eastern front in the Great War. After Germany's complete collapse on the western front, in the late autumn of 1918, von Ludendorff fled to Sweden. He returned to Germany in the spring of 1919, to be- . come'/the focus of all reactionary conspiracies. In 1923 ho took part in Hitler's fruitless "putsch" at Munich. Only his 6; past reputation saved him from the - consequence of that ignominious fiasco. In lat«j years he has been conspicuous for his vehement denunciation of Christianity. In 1925 he stood for the Presidency and gained one per cent of the votes cast. He has sought con- " verts to "the Germanic faith," as req.l Tealed in the old Nordic songs.
