SWIMMING

DOMINION COUNCIL PAST SEASON REVIEWED The epidemic of infantile paralysis last summer resulted in an almost complete suspension of normal activities on tho part of clubs and centres, states the report of the council of tho New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. After consultation with tho health authorities the council decided to cancel both the New Zealand championships and tho junior and intermediate championships. These wero re-allotted to the centres which would have conducted them last season, and will now be held as follows: —National championships, at Now Plymouth, January 8, 10 and 12; junior and intermediate championships, at Nelson, January 15, 17 and 18. Early in the season the Australians, W. Fleming and A. O'Connor, and their coach, D. Hellmrich, visited the Dominion at the invitation of the Otago Centre. From the swimming point of view the tour was a gratifying success. Auckland received a visit from the American star, J. Medica. who was on the way to Australia. The Auckland Centro made the most of this unique opportunity by bringing the visitor and his manager into contact with local swimmers. As tho result of constant complaints as to the poor quality of the springboards in New Zealand, the council imported from America two standard international springboards. These have been received by the Taranaki Centre and will be used at the coming national championships. The council gave attention during tho year to the procuring of motion pictures for educational purposes in New Zealand. It was found that tho purchase of films from overseas would be both costly and unsatisfactory, and attention is now being directed to the possibility of securing the necessary plant for tho making of suitable pictures in New Zealand. With tho formation of the National Council of Phvsical Welfare and Kecreation, and with tho resumption of financial assistance from the Government, a tremendous increase is anticipated in tho educational work of the association.
