ANNUAL PAID HOLIDAYS
INCLUDING ALL WORKERS MINISTER'S RECOMMENDATION Recommendations are to he made to the Government concerning provision of annual paid holidays for all workers, according to a statement made to the Standard bv the Minister of Labour, tho Hon. 11. T. Armstrong'. Mr. Armstrong said that during his investigations of industrial conditions in many countries subsequent to his attending the International Labour Office Conference he had found that several Continental countries had made legislative provision for holidays, which were not left to be a matter of bargaining between workers and employers, it was recognised that, from the point of view of the national welfare, all citizens needed periodical rests and changes of surroundings. Some nations, besides legislating for holidays, set up organisations to ensure that working families got the maximum benefit from them through cheap transport to and inexpensive accommodation at holiday resorts, said Mr. ArmstrongIn Germany, for instance, every worker had from eight days' to three weeks' annual leave on pay, and by .subscribing a sum equivalent to £2 10s to tho "Strength Through Joy." organisation ho could get, for himself and family, transport to and hotel-room at some centre of rest aild recreation. The "Strength Through Joy" movement, for the principle of which tho .Minister expressed admiration, was building several luxury cruise-ships to take workers for holidays outside their own eountrv.
