HEAVY SPECULATION

NEW RECORD AT TE RAPA

Although the totalisator turnover of £51,575 at To Rapa on Saturday was a record for the course, it was not the largest for one day for the Waikato Racing Club (formerly Hamilton Racing Club) and was exceeded more than once? when tlie meetings were held on the old course at Claudelands. The highest turnover was £55,895 10s on the first day of the meeting held in February, 1921 and there was also heavy wagering on the first day in February, 19:20, when £52,894 was handled. The attendance at Te Rapa on Saturday was probably also a record for the course. The gate receipts totalled £932. SCRATCHING OF SULEIMAN ACCEPTOR FOR TO-DAY

Many people were disappointed when Suleiman was scratched for the Cainbridge Handicap at Te Rapa on Saturday, ns in view of his record of three wins in as many starts his first appearance in open company is being awaited with interest. Suleiman was withdrawn from the race at 3.25 p.m. He appears as an acceptor for the Hamilton Handicap to-day and will have a strong following if started. WRONG NUMBER HOISTED WAIKATO CUP PLACINGS Some excitement was caused among the spectators at Te Rapa on Saturday when a wrong number was ,inserted in the frame showing the judge's placings in the Waikato Cup, in which Master Brierlv and Jonathan dead-heated for first. The numbers four and two were hoisted as the dead-heaters instead of four and one, and when the public realised the position there were immediate cries of "Jonathan won," which were kept up until the judge, Mr. A. Tronson rectified the error. Jonathan carried No. 1 saddlecloth and Scotland, who looked like being a, certain placegetter when he flashed up on the outside at the distanco, carried No. 2. Scotland weakened in tho last little bit and finished fifth.

A HEAVY POLL

A..FC. COMMITTEE ELECTION

The keenness with which the position of racing in New South Wales has been debated is reflected in the great interest taken by members of tbc Australian Jockey Club in the election of a member of the committee to replace tbc late chairman, Sir Colin Stephen. Of the 1500 members, no fewer than 123'! exercised their privilege, and Mr. 11. 11. Dangar, owner of Peter Pan, was elected by a small majority over Sir Johij McKelvcy. Subsequent to his election, Mr. Dangar said he was in favour of the early drawing and announcement of post positions, which has been the practice in Victoria for some time past.
