OBITUARY

MR. ABRAHAM S. COHEN The death occurred on Saturday of Mr. Abraham Solomon Cohen, at the ago of 82. The son of a Jewish rabbi, Mr. Cohen was born in Memel when Lithuania was under Russian rule. At 13 years of age he went to England, where ho lived until he was 40. He then came to New Zealand and settled in Auckland, where he lived for the remaining years of his life, the last 20 years at liis late residence, 4 Kelmarna Avenue, Heme Bay. In time he became a prominent member of the Hebrew congregation at the Synagogue and a close friend of the late Rabbi S. A. Goldstein, and for many years he was an honorary teacher at the Auckland Hebrew College. He had few interests outside his home and his church. He has left a wife and two daughters. MR. W. HANNA [FIIOM OUR OWN correspondent] CAMBRIDGE, Saturday The death occurred yesterday of Mr. "William Hanna, of Clare Street, Cambridge, aged S3 years. The late Air. Hanna was born at Dundrod, Belfast, where he was educated and was married in 1891. With his family he came to New Zealand 23 years ago, and had resided at Auckland and Te Awamutu. For the past eight years he had been a resident of Cambridge. Mr. Hanna is survived by his wife, three sons and one daughter. MRS. A. M. BOWDEN [from our own correspondent] TE AWAMUTU. Sunday

The death has occurred of Mrs. Anna Maria Bowden. one of the earliest settlers of the To Awamutu district, aged 65 years. Mrs Bowden was born at Mangere, and was brought by her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Gibson, to To Awamutu when three weeks old. They travelled overland on foot and by horse and cart. The family settled at Mangapiko. where they built a house principally constructed of raupo and with a clay iloor. Here they iived for a number of years until another building was erected. Mrs. Bowden was the wife of the late Mr. Charles Bowden, for many years clerk of the Waipa County Council. She is survived by ono son and two daughters.

MR. W. B. GILMORE [from OUlt own correspondent] THAMES. Sunday The death occurred at Thames on Saturday morning of Mr. William Bernard Gilmore, aged 51 years. Mr. Gilmore was born in Auckland, but went to Karangahako when quite young, finally taking up mining. He saw service in the great war and returned to live at Thames. He became secretary of tho Thames Returned Soldiers' Association and had been its president for the past year. He was also president of the Karangahako Old Boys' Association. Mr. Gilmore was of great assistance also in organising functions for the help of St. John Ambulance Association and the Miners' Pensioners' Association. Ho leaves a widow, two sons and one daughter. He will be accorded a military funeral on Monday. MRS. M. N. WILLIAMS [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] DAHGAVILLE, Saturday The death occurred suddenly at Tangowahine of Mrs. Mary Norma Williams. Born in Waipu, she spent tho whole of her life in the North. She came to the Northern Wairoa district 25 years ago. She is survived by her husband, two sons and two daughters. mr. s. McCarthy [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] TAUMARUNUI, Saturday Tho death has occurred at his residence on the Main South Road of Mr. S. McCarthy, aged 80 years, lie was born in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland, and came to New Zealand when a young man, settling in Wellington. He followed the construction of the Main Trunk railway, and made Taihape his headquarters for many years before coming to Taumarunui 30 years ago. Ho is survived by one daughter.
