HON. P. FRASER OFFICIATES PROGRESS OF THE DISTRICT Widespread interest in the inauguration of a reticulated water supply for the Manurewa district was reflected in tlio largo attendance at the official ceremony, which was performed by the Minister of Health, the Hon. P. Eraser, 011 Saturday afternoon. There was a large attendance of residents and representatives of local bodies between the city and Papakura. The chairman of the Town Board, Mr. \V. T. Cox, who presided, urged residents to do their share by taking advantage of che supplies now available.

From the day he had assumed office as Minister of Health, continued Mr. Fraser, the affairs of Manurewa had loomed largely in his department, and lie had authorised an inquiry to bo held as to the necessity for a water scheme. It was on the findings of the special committee that the Board of Health had approved the scheme now brought to fruition. Ho expressed tlio hope that tlio district, which was to bo raised to the status of a borough next month, would continue to progress, and that Manurewa would become the centre of a large and prosperous district.

Hie Minister turned on the supply at a hydrant in front of the Town Hall and a stream of water gushed forth from a length of hose-pipe to a height of about 70ft. The hoard presented Mr. Eraser with a souvenir key suitably inscribed. Members of adjacent local bodies also spoke. Water Board Scheme Mr. 11 E. MeKutee, chairman of the Papakura Town Board, from which the Manurewa supplies are being obtained, said there was sufficient water in the Hunua Gorge to supply all local bodies between Papakura and the Auckland boundary. Jt was merely a matter of conservation by raising the present dam. He hoped that in the future an effort would be made to revive interest in the proposed Manukau Water Board, which could develop a major scheme.

The Ministerial party and visitors were entertained at afternoon tea by the Town Board. During the proceedings selections were played by the Auckland Mounted Rifles Band.
