PLUNKET SYSTEM

PRAISE FROM WRITER

IMPRESSIONS OF DOMINION ATTRACTION TO AMERICANS A well-known American journalist, authoress and lecturer, Mrs. Mildred Seydell, passed through Auckland yesterday h.v the Mariposa en route to Los Angeles. She spent a fortnight in New Zealand on her way to Australia last month, and already has written several articles about the country for American newspapers. While in the Dominion Mrs. Seydell studied the Plunket system and visited farmers' wives in the South Island and talked with them on the political trend in the Dominion with particular reference as to how the various new laws affected the average housewife. "Although 1 had heard a little about the New Zealand l'lunket system when I was in Palestine, I had never quite realised its ramifications until I arrived here," said Mrs. Seydell. "I am amazed at the knowledge the women

in New Zealand have of the Plunket and Karitane systems, and have seen innumerable instances of how helpful this knowledge is to the mothers in the rearing of their babies." Although Mrs. Seydell was not impressed with New Zealand hotels, she said she was particularly taken with the scenic beauty of the Dominion, and thought that with such countries as Japan, China and Spain now closed to the tourist, owing to the conflicts taking place there, New Zealand had a wonderful opportunity to attract the American, who was essentially a great traveller and was never really content unless lie was travelling. During the few hours she was m Auckland yesterday, Mrs. Seydell visited the Auckland War Memorial Museum to obtain further information for an article she intends to write on New Zealand mythology.
