MAORI CHIEFTAINESS

DEATH AT WAIHEKE The death has occurred at Surfdale, Waiheke, of Mis. Mihi Te Urikaraka Te AY aero, a chieftainess of the Xgati-paoa tribe, at the age ot 6S years. Mrs. Te Waero was born at Whakatiwai, near Miranda, but had resided 011 Waiheke Island for the last 40 years. She was a daughter of Rawiri Puhata, a prominent chief ot the Ngati-huroa tribe. Her husband, Unnkaraka Te Waero, died two years ago at the age of 77. He was born at Miranda, and had lived at Waiheke for 55 years before his death, being recognised as the leader of the Waiheke Maoris. Mrs. Te Waero is survived by two sons and four daughters. There are 20 grandchildren- and two great-grand* children. Relatives arrived at Waiheke bv launch yesterday from Auckland and the funeral ceremony will take place to-morrow at Huruhi Bas*.
