POLLING IN AMERICA
MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS NEW YORK, Nov. 3 In addition to the New York City elections, other important municipal elections were held in Detroit, Akron and Canton, where Labour candidates were defeated. The Committee for Industrial Organisation backed Mr. Patrick O'Brien in Detroit. He urged that Labour should "seize the reins of Government." However, Mr. Richard Reading (Democrat) was elected. All tbo C.1.0. candidates for tho City Council were defeated. The American Federation of Labour and the C.1.0. combined to back Labour candidates in Ohio cities, but Republicans were elected. Added interest was attached to the New York City elections on the present occasion as they were, for the first time, conducted under tho proportional representation system. This system has been followed in the past in some other cities in the United States. ,
