MELBOURNE MURDER
TRUCK DRIVER'S FATE POLICE THEORY OF CRIME WOOL THIEVES SUSPECTED (Received November 5, 12.45 a.m.) MELBOURNE. Nov 4 An examination shows that John Thomas Dempsey, the transport truck driver whose body was discovered buried in a sack, was shot three times near the heart at close quarters. There has been no major development in the investigation. The police are satisfied that Dempsey was murdered by a gang of wool thieves who apparently have a "receiver" somewhere in the city, as the wool on Dempsey's truck could not be disposed of under its original brands in its original bales. Altogether 23 bales were stolen. Thefts of wool from transport trucks plying between the country and city have been rather frequent lately. The procedure usually is to steal the wool while the trucks are slowly ascending steep gradients, the bandits mounting the trucks and tossing the bales off in the darkness.
