CRITICISM OF DEFENCES BRITAIN AND ITALY (Received November 4, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Nov. 4 Criticisms of the defences of Malta and Gibraltar and of the Government's weak attitude in the face of Italian bluffing were voiced by Lord Strabolgi in the House of Lords. He said Italy's power for mischief was greatly exaggerated. She had extraordinarily vulnerable armies scattered in Libya, Ethiopa and Spain. The situation at Gibraltar alarmed him. It was not an invulnerable fortress. as was once taught. Lord Strickland appealed for an improvement in the defences and an overhaul of politics in Malta. The Marquess of DufTerin a'nd Ava. in reply, said the defences of Malta would be taken in hand rapidly. Exports did not consider that Gibraltar was untenable. Britain's sole concern in the Mediterranean was for an undisturbed highway. A sincere understanding with Italy was ono of the main conditions of peaco.
