ACCESS TO RUSSELL
IMPROVING THE HIGHWAY PERMANENT WORK IN HAND The Russell road, which has been criticised by motorists recently, was examined by officials of the Automobile Association (Auckland), who are at present touring the north. The president, Mr. F. G. Farrcll, said he had been informed that permanent repairs had been put in hand, and that slips were being completely removed, watertables cleaned and the running surfaces restored to a satisfactor3* standard. The hill section in the vicinity of Helena Bay had suffered very severely a few months ago, as a result of a storm, Mr. Farrell added. The engineers did not consider then that it was advisable to disturb the wet hillsides more than was necessary to permit traffic to pass. After tho recent long spell of fine weather, however, the country had consolidated sufficiently to permit more extensive repairs.
