HELP FOR THE CHINESE
Sir, —Under this heading in Wednesday's Hkh.w.d 1 read that Mr. Phil pot of the Newmarket Borough Council made the following remarks regarding a proposed subscription list for Chinese refugees:—"lt puts us in an awkward position. Some other organisations sympathising with the Japanese might want assistance and there is danger wo might be accused of taking sides." Now why did people make no subscriptions to China when Japan invaded Manchuria a few years ago? I think they felt that it was a military war, and that the soldiers on both sides were the ones to suffer. To-day thousands of civilians arc suffering and homeless because Japanese soldiers have bombed towns and villages in China. 1 may say that it would not be a hard job for Chinese aeroplanes to bomb Tokio, as it is only a six-hour journey from Shanghai, and only four hours from Shanhinkwan, but the Chinese Government has riot done it. 1 hope that Mr. Phil pot will finite understand the reason why people all over the world are sympathising with China this time. Y. S. Chau.
