TAUPO FISHING
FORTUNES OF ANGLERS] STRONG WIND ON LAKE NEED OF ACCESS TO BAYS [JIV TELEGRAPH —OWN COUnKSI-ONDKNT] TAUPO, Thursday Due to the strong south-westerly wind which lias been blowing since Tuesday, the fishing 011 the lake lias been confined to the bays 011 the western side between Rangatira Point and the wharf. If is unfortunate that there is not a good motor road to this area, in which there are some excellent flyfishing spots. At the present time traffic is not allowed over Mr. Booth's farm, as a notice has. been erected to that effect, and thus the only way to approach this area is by launch. The fishing in the Waikato River is generally good, particularly just above the Hulca Falls.
Fishing below the Huka Falls, Captain Euan Dickson and Mr. Sidney Thorne George, of Auckland, landed 4.5 trout between Sunday and Wednesday. The largest weighed 81b. The anglers found the fish in better condition than is usual at this time of the year, spawning apparently having taken place earlier than usual. The water was too clear, howevor, for the sport to be at its best.
Mr. Horlick and party, fishing from a launch, in two hours secured six fair fish, the best of which was sJlb., all between Rangatira Point and the wharf. M essrs. Maxten Brothers, of Tauranga, in ail outboard motor-boat, secured six fish in the same locality. Mr. P. Sweetapple and Mr. T. Higgins, of Napier, also secured six fish with the fly from a dinghy at the Ripple, near the wharf, in two hours. Mr. F. Carr and Mr. S. Boyton, of Wellington, on the Spa reach on the Waikato River, fishing with the wet fly, secured 15 good fish yesterday and 11 more to-day. The best was 6Jib., with an average of 3Jib. Mr. and Mrs. T. of Wellington, fly-fishing at the Four Mile Bay, secured 21 good fighting fish in four days, and then, fishing on the Spa roach, secured eight fish, the best being 6j[lb. and the average 3Jlb. Mr. Fulljames. fishing on the lower Waikato, landed an eight-pounder and two sixpounders, all in good fighting condition. Present indications are that the south-westerly wind is dropping and that conditions 011 the lake will improve.
