SCOUT MOVEMENT

PROGRESS OF BRANCHES GOOD INFLUENCE FOR BOYS The use of Scout House, Wellesley Street, in the lunch hour by boys •who were working in the city was mentioned by Mr. A. Service, assistant metropolitan commissioner, at the annual meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Boy Scouts' Association last night. Scout House served a valuable purpose in this way, he said, as boys could spend their time in a place which spoke of the ideals of scouting.

The movement had enjoyed a sue- j cessful year and had consolidated the ground gained, Mr. Sen-ice said. The movement would go on whatever mistakes those in executive positions made, as it made a strong appeal to boys and filled a definite need. The speaker referred to the severe loss the movement had suffered in the death of Mr. W. J. Holdsworth and suggested that som.e action should be taken to perpetuate his memory. He had brought order out of chaos and had restored coufidence to the movement. Major J. C. Conlan, who presided, said it was a matter for regret that more support was not given to the Boy Scout movement by outside organisaions. It was of inestimable value as a steadying influence for boys, and he wondered why''the Government had not given it financial recognition. The lone scout and cub, sea scout and rover branches of the movement were dealt -with by the respective commissioners, Messrs. N; M. Matheson, A. J. Veart and W. D. Johns. The council for the ensuing year will comprise the following:—Chairman, Mr. L. Taylor; council, the Keys. G. V. Gerard," L. E. Cartridge, Major -T. C. Conlan, Messrs. A- T. Dow, H. Robinson, D. Henry, E. E. Kitchenor, D. M. Bae T. O'Dowd, J. Tyler, J. W. M. Edwards M. Gumming, A. S. P. Brookfield. G. L. Taylor,-G. F. Frieberg, S. Takle, C. H. Furness.
