INCREASE IN BUSINESS THE AUCKLAND DISTRICT THE SPRINGBOKS' TOUR Revenue earned by the Railway Department in the Auckland district, northern section, during the fourweekly period ended October 10, shows a substantial increase over the figures for the corresponding month last year. The total revenue for the four weeks this year amounted to £161,590, an increase of £15,515 over last year's figure. For the seven months ended October 16 an increase of £112.997 is recorded.

Owing to heavy additional passenger trafiie during the tour of t)i*o Springboks and for recent race meetings, the number of ordinary passenger tickets issued during the four weeks increased by GlO7, substantial increases also being recorded in the number of season nml trip tickets issued. Cattle and calves carried during the four weeks this year increased by IG3O over the 1936 figure, while 4854 more sheep and pigs were carried. For the 28 weeks ended October 1(3, however, there was an increase of 118,542 tons under this heading. A new item appearing on the returns this year is the number of road motor passengers carried. For the six months ended September 18, the total was only 87, but since the Railway Department has taken over the "K" motor services operating between Hamilton and Rotorua the total has been increased during the four weeks by .'5076 to 3153. With the through service from Auckland to Rotorua now controlled by the department, it is anticipated that this total will show a further substantial increase at the end of the next period. The revenue under this heading amounts to £1857 for the four weeks.
