DEFENCE RESEARCH WORK INVALUABLE ASSISTANCE (Received October 22, G. 5 p.m.) LONDON. Oct, 22 Sir Thomas Inskip, Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence, in a letter to the Times, pays a tribute to the late Lord Rutherford of Nelson for his services to the Government. "Those who worked with him in directing research in certain directions," says the Minister, "alone know how invaluable was his help."

Friday Reference to the death of Lord Kutherford is made in a cablegram which was received to-dav from the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs, Mr. Malcolm MaeDonald. "His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom." the message states, "joins with His Majesty's Government in New Zealand in mourning the loss which the whole scientific world has sustained by the death of Lord Rutherford. His brilliant researches have opened the door to new discoveries which will assure him a place in history as one of the founders of modern physics."

A CITY HONOURED NELSON'S INDEBTEDNESS [BY TELKGIIAPH —FRKSS ASSOCIATION'] NELSON, Friday Referring to the death of Lord Rutherford. Mr. G. L. Page, Mayor of Nelson, said the city was indeed indebted to Lord Rutherford for the honour lie had bestowed on it in choosing the title of Lord Rutherford of Nelson. „ Students of Nelson College will attend a memorial service at the Cathedral on Sunday. Mr. F. Milner, C.M.G., rector of Waitaki Boys' High School, who was a contemporary of Lord Rutherford at Nelson College, expressed in a message to the principal his deepest sympathy with the college in the loss of its greatest son, whoso brilliant scientific achievements lent lustre to Nelson College and gained the admiration of the whole world.
