SCORED TWICE WITH AMATEURS l Hitherto, the Trentham owner and trainer R. W. Lewis has been chiefly identified in turf circles as the owner of the successful steeplechaser Billy Boy, but, the other active member of his team, Shy, lias more than paid his way in his three seasons of racing. Shv had one race as* a three-year-old and in the following season lie gained three wins and three seconds in 14 starts. He was successful in a maiden race at Levin, the Camp Handicap at the Trentham Summer Meeting and tho Carbine Plato at Ellerslie. The two lastnamed wins were gained by very narrow margins. As a five-year-old Shy won twice and was four times placed in 19 races. He won the Duke of Gloucester Cup at Riccarton and tho Plunket Handicap at Ellerslie, besides gaining good placemoney by his seconds in tin? Wellington Summer Handicap and the President's Handicap at To Aroha, when he went under to llazir by half a head. Shy was well supported for tho Winter Cup and the Islington Handi- , cap at Christehurch in August, but failed to develop the form expected, and did not appear again until tho recent Masterton meeting. He won the High-weight Handicap on the first day by half a head from Hazoor and was fourth in the Vallance Memorial on the second day. The latter event was won by Sunee, who met Shy in tho Wellington Handicap Thursday Gib. better, but Sunee was not place'L Shy has won seven races and £1735 in stakes and trophies. He is by Valkvrian from Stage Fright, by Lirnond from Tivoli, a maro by Absurd, who was bred by Mr. G. M. Currie and sold in Australia in 1928. Shy was bred by Mr. S. G. Holmes and has been raced always by Lewis. TIME COMPARISONS JELLICOE HANDICAP FIELD A feature of the field for the Jellicoo Handicap at Epsom to-day is that two of the candidates, Kewpie's Bond and Noble Prince, have no placed performance at two miles, but at a mile and a-half their 'best times compare very favourably with those of their opponents. Kewpie's Bond recorded 3.18 4-5 in her last win, when the track was not particularly fast, while in the South Island Noble Prince has run .'>.l7 .'l-5, 3.18 3-5 and 3.19. Kewpie's King has only one placed performance. 4.3(5 2-5, for two - miles and Kenworthy, after being second in the Hawera Cup in 4.36 2-5, won the Taranaki Cup in 4.30. Gold Drpdgo has a consistent record, her best being 4.29 3-ss. In addition, she has registered 4.30, 4.31 3-5 and 4.32. Our McKinney's fastest time is 4.32 3-5, but his other performances were on holding tracks. Lady Fame's best time on the grass is 4.34, but she has a dirt track record of 4.30. On a time basis Ncrvie's Lust has the greatest margin, as he won the Jellicoo Handicap last year in 4.26 4-5 and was placed at Addington in 4.21 1-5, when the track was very fast. He has tho fastest mile and a-half record, 3.16 2-5, at Ashburton, besides a mile record of 2.4 2-5 from a Hying start at Alexandra Park'.
