INTOXICATED IN CHARGE PROHIBITED FROM DRIVING [lll* TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] TE AWAMUTU. Friday Charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor vehicle, and driving without a licence, Leonard Eves, a farm labourer, of Poktiru, appeared before Messrs. G. A. Empson and W. Swain, J.l'.'s, in the Te Awauiutu Police Court. Mr. S. S. Preston appeared for defendant. Constable J. Forsyth said defendant had been observed driving a car in an erratic manner from the direction of Hamilton. When lie realised tho police were watching him he parked the car and changed.places with a, companion. Defendant and his companion then visited an hotel, where they remained for 15 minutes. Eves was later arrested and taken into custody. Ho had been convicted on a similar charge in May last, when lie was fined £lO and his licence was cancelled until May, 1938. Mr. Preston said Eves had accompanied his companion on a trip to Hamilton. On the return journey the companion, who had been driving the car, was taken ill, and Eves had found it necessary to bring the car into To Awamutu. He was actually in a garage making arrangements to be driven home when he was arrested. There was no evidence as to bis condition when he parked the car. Defendant was fined £lO and costs on the intoxication charge, and £1 and costs on the charge of driving without a licence. He was also prohibited from obtaining a licence for two years after tho expiration of the , present term.
