MUST NOT MARRY
YOUNG SYDNEY POLICEMEN Young policemen of Sydney, with less than three years' service, must "in the interests of the service" remain single. The Commissioner, Mr. MaoKay, has informed the Police Association that ho does not feel justified in altering the regulation forbidding them to marry. The association some weeks ago protested to the department over the question. "In reply, the Commissioner pointed out that it was necessary that there should be a mobile force, and that there were instances where policemen had to ho sunt to different parts of the State at a moment's notice," said the secretary of the association. "In some cases, where married men had been transferred in the ordinary course, representations had been made on the ground that the officer concerned possessed a partly-paid-for house or had certain family responsibilities."
111 special < ases, it was pointed out, tho department had granted constables permission to marry within tho banned period. It is likely that the Police Association will seek to have the matter reopened. Tho subject will be discussed at the next meeting of the executive.
