CONSCRIPTION ISSUE

FEDERAL POLITICS MR. LYONS' ASSURANCE MELBOURNE, Oct. 19 The Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, in broadcasting from Bendigo, said: "I solemnly declare that my Government's policy never has included and never will include conscription. There will be no conscription while my G6vernment is in office, I give you that definite assurance."

This was the Primo Minister's reply to allegations by Labour that the Federal Government was committed to a policy of conscription and war. Replying to Mr. Lyons at Melbourne, Mr. J. Curtiu, Federal Labour leader, said no reliance could bo placed on the Primo Minister's declarations. He added: "If war broke out there would be conscription overnight."
