LARGE NEW CHURN

INSTALLED AT WAIUKU HUNDRED BOXES A TIME With a view to improving quality and securing more uniformity in the texture of the butter manufactured, and incidentally- to effect economies, the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited, is installing churns of unusually large size in its butter factories. One of them, made by Messrs A. and G. Price, Limited, Thames, has been in operation at the company's Waiuku factory since September 10, and has since given very satisfactory service. The churn is built on the "internal working" style, and is similar to the kind originally used in Denmark and Germany. The design has been greatly improved and developed in the last 10 years. The wooden portion of the unit, which weighs nine tons, is built entirely of kauri. In one churning the machine will make 100 boxes or 2$ tons of butter, almost twice the amount which it was possible to turn out in any churn previously used. The new churns, which are possibly the largest in the world, and which are certainly the largest used in New Zealand, have been selected by the company for the purpose of producing butter of even quality such as is difficult to obtain when a number of smaller units are employed. The moisture and salt distribution is more uniform. Less handling is involved on account of the larger quantities of. butter dealt with, and manufacturing costs are thus reduced. The company has purchased another 100-box churn from Messrs. Anderson's, Limited, Christchurcli, and is installing it in the new 5000-ton butter factory that is nearing completion at Tirau.
