SMUGGLING TOBACCO
DISCOVERIES ON LINER SYDNEY CUSTOMS OFFICERS In six raids on the liner Changte in Sydney recently, Customs officers seized 43,000 cigarettes aftd cigarillos, 100 cigars and > several pounds of tobacco. The contraband -was found in the hold, between decks, in rope fenders, and in a hollowed-out hatch cover. A compartment 4ft. long and Bin. wide, cut in the hatch cover, held nearly 3000 cigarettes of good quality. The compartment was covered -with # worn three-ply, 'the same color as the wood, but brand new screws, which would have attracted attention even at a distance, had been used to fasten the false cover. Some cigarettes were found in places that had been searched several times without result, proving the Customs ■men's theory that watchers hide goods again during their search.
