WIDENING SOUTH ROAD
ONE TREE HILL PROPOSAL I I NO MAIN HIGHWAYS GRANT Representations in support of the One Tree Hill Borough Council's proposal to widen the Great South Road, between the Harp of Erin and Penrose, elicited a reply from the Main Highways Board to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday, that as the borough's population precluded there being any main highways within its territory, subsidies were not available from the Main Highways Fund. The borough received a per capita payment from a portion of the petrol tax to continue highway work. "The proposed work is of greater importance than any other road schemo on which the Government is spending money," said Mr. J*. B. Spencer. "Even if we have to assist the Borough Council to get a Government grant, we should follow up the proposal all we can." it was decided to support the council in any further steps it chose to take.
