DEAN FOR AUCKLAND
CANON W. FANCOURT ARCHBISHOP'S SUGGESTION MOTION BEFORE THE SYNOD A proposal to raise the status of Canon W. Fancourt to that of dean was mentioned by Archbishop Averill in his address to the Anglican Synod yesterday. He said he intended to ask the concurrence of synod in such an appointment, and notice of motion to this effect, to be taken to-day, was later given. In his address to synod in 1931, said Archbishop Averill, he had said that it was in his mind then to ask synod to concur in the appointment of a dean for the cathedral, but in view of the financial depression he had decided to abandon the project for the time being. Now, however, as lie was very • anxious that the cathedral
chapter should become a functioning body in connection with the preliminary steps for the erection of a new cathedral, and that it would be prepared to take its proper place when the cathedral was built, he thought the time was opportune for raising the status of the vicar of the cathedral parish to that of dean. Canon Fancourt had been vicar of the Cathedral Church and parish of St. Mary's since 1929. He came to New Zealand in 1907 as assistantcurate of St. Thomas' Church, Well—ington, after having held a similar position at a Liverpool church. Subse- % quently he was vicar of churches and parishes at Island Bay, Wellington, and Palmerston "North, and from 1919 to 1929 he was honorary chaplain to the Bishop of Wellington. In 1925. he was made canon of St. Paul's ProCathedrai. Wellington. Recently he was appointed examining chaplain to Archbishop Averill as Bishop of Auckland.
