STEWART ISLAND

FERRY SERVICE URGED [bv TELEGRAPH OWN- correspondent] IX\ ERCARGILL, Monday A suggestion that a daily ferry service between Stewart Island and Bluff should be organised and that it should be controlled by the Railway Department, thus enabling fishermen to get a direct service, was made by Mr. Charles Robertson, of Stewart Island. Mr. Robertson, who is. stated to be the oldest inhabitant of the island, expressed a desire to see the country opened up immediately and pastoral development begun. A short business visit from Stewart Island to Invercargill entails a cost of least £10," said Mr. Robertson. I'rom that it can easily be understood that no business can flourish. A daily service, independent of the tourist trade, should be started. A small ton boat, leaving the island ever morning, would enable fishermen to get a direct service." Mr. Robertson said the service could be conducted by the Railway Department at a cost no greater than tht> running of a locomotive. The boat should carry about 200 cases of fish. "Stewart Island is not being developed," lie continued. f 'lhere is room for over 500 farms there and the coastal lands would carry four sheep to the acre when the ground was cleared and grassed."
