BATTLE IN A MINE
2000 NATIVES ENGAGED OUTBREAK ON THE RAND JOHANNESBURG, Oct. S The police quelled a battle this morning which was raging a thousand feet below the surface in the West Rand Consolidated mine. The trouble began in the compound when an assault on a Basuto resulted in a midnight battle in which two thousand native labourers used knives, clubs, spears and stones. The police quelled the outbreak with tear gas, but at. dawn, when the natives descended the mine, the fight between the Pondos and Basutos began again. The police rushed down the mine and cornered and arrested many of the combatants after hard fighting.
