ALBERTA'S TROUBLES MR. ABERHART'S NEW ACTS PRESS. BANKS AND CREDIT By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received October 8. 5.5 p.m.) EDMONTON. Oct. 5 The Lieutenant-Governor, Mr. J. C. Bowen, has refused the Royal Assent to the three measures introduced by the Premier of Alberta, Mr. W. Aberhart, and passed by the Legislature—the Press and Bank Taxation Acts and the Amendment to the Credit of Alberta Regulations Act. Assent has been denied "until the further signification of them has been received by the Governor-General, Lord Tweedsmuir."
The Lieutenant-Governor has prorogued the Legislature. A message from Calgary said the Trade Board, in a telegram to the Dominion Prime Minister, Mr. W. L. Mackenzie King, urged that the Lieutenant-Governor be instructed to refuse his assent to the Acts.
POLITICIAN ARRESTED POLICE RAID SEQUEL SEIZURE OF PAMPHLETS EDMONTON. Oct. 5 A charge of counselling murder and also three allegations of libel were preferred against Joseph Unwin, Government Whip in the Alberta Legislature, who was arrested in connection with the pamphlets seized by the police when the offices of the Social Credit League were raided. The pamphlets described nine prominent opponents of the Government as "bankers' toadies" and urged readers to "exterminate them."
TJnwiu reserved his plea and was remanded for nine days on 5000 dollars bail. The charge was laid by Senator Grieebach.
Unwin announced a fortnight ago that he would handle the Social Credit Board publicity.
