WHEAT INDUSTRY
£150,000 GOVERNMENT GRANT
ENCOURAGING EXPANSION
[BY TELEGRAPH —TRESS ASSOCIATION*]
WELLINGTON, Wednesday
Explaining a grant of £150.000, described in the Estimates as a provision to encourage the development of the wheat industry, the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, said this money represented the difference between the original price of 4s 9d a bushel paid to the grower, and the subsequent increased price of os 3d.
An increase in the production of wheat was necessary, and to encourage growers to expand their crops last season the Government decided to offer them a higher price. Ihe price was also intended to meet higher wagee and changes in working conditions. While an increase had been made in the price of wheat, the Government had not passed it on to the consumer of bread. The extra amount had been carried by the Government, which, in expending £150,000, had saved t e public £300,000, a sum that would have been necessary had the increase been passed on to the public.
