FAT STOCK SALES

PRICES AT WESTFIELD

FIRM QUOTATIONS GENERAL

GOOD QUALITY AGAIN LACKING

Quotations were firm in all sections of the market at the Westfield fat stock sales yesterday. Quality was again at a premium in some sections, particularly in heavy sheep, but prices suflored no ill-effect. Beef sold readily. Sheep were inclined to be slow of sale, although not in the hogget and spring lamb races. Few pood calves were available, and while most pigs were steady in price, baconers eased by about 2s a head.

Many more cows were yarded than tor some weeks past; but there was little improvement in quality, as shown by the top price of £l3 10s. which was £1 7s Gd under the corresponding sale of ii week ago. There was also a small decline in the best transaction for steers, which ranged to £lB. The average was unchanged for the seventh successive week to 41s per 1001b. Dearth of Prime Sheep Short entries of sheep have marked the last few sales, and yesterday's supply was no exception. No extra heavy wethers were offered, and the heaviest woolly sorts realised to 45s 6d, which was an advance of 2s on the bidding at. the last sale. Ewes in the wool went under the hammer to 38s, as against 41s last week. Shorn wethers brought 34s and ewes 20s. Competition increased during the clearance of a prime assortment of hoggets. Finest grades made from 23s to 37s a head, while lighter and unfinished hoggets were quoted from 15s. The yumber of spring lambs showed another weekly increase, some well-finished ones attracting exceptionally keen bidding. Prices ranged from 22s 6d to 37s 6d, compared with a top bid of 39s at the former sale. Bacon Pigs Cheaper No extra choice runners were yarded, and heavy vealers were scarce in a full entry of calves. The quality of the preponderance of small calves was much better than last week. JL<'or primest vealers the demand was steady, but prices for other sorts were about 2s a head lower than on- recent sales. Pig quality was slightly below standard, many lines lacking tinish. 'l'here was a firm sale for porkers, but a slightly easier tendency for baconers, after their temporary recovery last week. Baconers averaged from 6£d to Old per lb. and porkers to 7d. Stores sold well at firm rates.
