[by telegraph—own correspondent"] NAPIER, Monday The quarter-finals of the New Zealand ladies' y;olf championship were decided at Waiohiki to-day. A feature of the play was the defeat of Mrs. 11. S. Fullorton-Sinith by Miss J. Honvell. fl and 5, while Mrs. G. Hollis, in her match with Mrs. D. Crisp, had to fight hard to win, 1 up. The Australians, Miss K. M. Button, Miss S. Tolhurst and Mrs. S. Morpeth all won theiv games. Play was made difficult by a strong, gusty wind, otherwise the conditions were perfect. Details of the play are as follows: Mrs. G. Hollis. Hawera. beat Mrs. D. Chrisp, Poverty Bay, 1 up. Miss K. M. Hutton, Australia, beat Miss M. Beadel, Christchurch, 2 and 1. Miss J. Horwell, Timaru, beat Mrs. JR. S. Fullerton-Smith, Marton, (3 and 5 Miss J. HOLLIS EXTENDED MISS BETTS PLAYING WELL [by telegraph OWN correspondent] NAPIER, Monday Miss Horwell beat Mrs. FullertonSmith by a comfortable margin. At the turn, Miss Horwell, who was playing very steadily and producing good golf, was 4 up, after wins at the first three holes and also at the eighth. Mrs. Fullerton-Smith did not play up to her form and mishit several shots. Miss Horwell continued on steadily by winning two more holes out of the next four, and she ended the game at the 13th.

Mrs. Hollis won her match against Mrs. Chrisp on the 18th green, this being the only one of the eight games to reach the last green. Mrs. Hollis won the sixth and ninth holes and was 2 up at the turn. She gained another hole at the 10th and again at the 12th after halving the 11th to stand 4 up and 6 to play. At the 13th Mrs. Chrisp laid Mrs. Hollis a stymie, which the latter failed to negotiate, knocking her opponent's ball into the hole to give her a win

Mrs. Clirisp won the short 14th, sinking a long putt for two and reducing her debit to 2 down. The loth was halved in fives and the 16th went to Mrs. Chrisp, five to six, Mrs. Hollis having duffed her second. Mrs. Hollis was thus 1 up and 2 to plav. The 17th ■was halved in fours, Mrs. Hollis being bunkered from the tee. The 18th was also halved in fours, Mrs. Chrisp just lipping the hole for three to lose the match by 1 down. Miss Hutton took the lead early against Miss Beadel and was 2 up at the fifth and 3 up at the ninth, her medal figures for the outward journey being 39, to Miss Beadel's 43. The latter improved in the second half and won back holes, but at the 16th Miss Hutton again stood 2 up. The match ended at the 17th, which was halved in threes. Both players were good off the tee. Miss Hutton's drives, especially, being long and straight. Miss Tolhurst won from Miss Wilson at the 16th. She won the first two holes in fours to fives and then followed six successive halves before Miss Tolhurst won in five to six at the ninth. The tenth and eleventh were halved in fours and fives, and then Miss Tolhurst picked up another hole to be 4 up with 6 to play. Miss Wilson rallied and won back two holes in succession, the 14th with a two as the result of a long putt. Miss Tolhurst then won the loth in three to four and the 16th in five to six to take the match. The first half of the match hetween Mrs Morpeth and Mrs. Alison was very evenly contested. Mrs. Morpeth won the second and sixth holes, while Mrs. Alison won the fourth and seventh. With a win at the ninth, Mrs. Morpeth turned 1 up, and two more wins placed her 3 up at the 13th. Then Mrs. Alison won the 14th by three to four. The next three holes were halved in fours, fives and threes, the game ending at the 17th green. Miss Betts was in brilliant form in her match with Mrs. McKillop. Miss Betts went out in par figures, 37, to be 6 up on her opponent. So excellently did Miss Betts play that her opponent was able to get halves at the fourth, sixth and ninth only. The game finished at the 12th, where Miss Betts secured a well-played four. Miss Betts' card for the first nine holes read as follows: —4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 3, 5, 5—37. Miss Helean beat Mrs. Stout by a good margin, the game finishing on the 13th green. The first hole was won by Miss Helean. Both sank putts from the edge of the green to halve in fours. The fifth went to Mrs. Stout, to make them all square. Miss ITelean then won the sixth, eight and ninth, with the seventh halved, and she turned 3 up. M iss Helean went on to win three more holes, and claim a final margin of 6 and 5.
