PROTEST BY MAORIS
ORAKEI ROAD FORMATION A strong protest against the action of the Public Works Department in pulling down fences and making preparations to form roads through the Coates Avenue section of the Orakei Maori settlement, was made by about 40 Maoris at a meeting held yesterday afternoon. Mr. Kohi Hemana, chairman of a special committee set up to lead the protest, stated last night that the contractors engaged on the Government housing scheme at Orakei had already placed pegs in position ready to start tho work of laying down, a road which would pass through tho settlement's cemetery.
Tho meeting decided that seven children from the Coates Avenue section of the villago who were pupils at the Kohimaraina school would be stopped from attending school until tho protest was recognised. The head teacher is to bo informed of the action taken.
