RUATANGATA REQUEST
NEED OF NEW STOCKYARDS URGENT REPRESENTATIONS [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI. Saturday A meeting of settlers and representatives of various stock auctioneering firms was held to-day to further pursue the matter of having new modern stock yards erected at Ruatangata. The chairman, Mr. D. J. Finlayson, said that the question was a vital one for the district. Negotiations had been going on for some time with the Railway Department. Engineers had inspected the site and a good plan had been prepared, but for some reason nothing further had been done by the department.
Mr. T. Mitchell, secretary of the committee which is conducting the negotiations, said that he had received advice from Mr. J. G. Barclay, M.P. for Marsden, that the estimated cost of the proposed new yards is £4OOO. Mr. Finlayson: The present accommodation could not be worse, and I think a delegation should be sent to Wellington to endeavour to have the matter completed, as the need is urgent. Mr. W. Wakelin moved that the meeting approve of the plans of the yards and urge on the Minister of Railways, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, that in view of the busy season approaching, especially for sheep and lambs, the yards be constructed forthwith. This motion was carried, and it was further decided that, failing the receipt of a satisfactory reply, the committee be authorised to send a delegation to interview the Minister.
