L'ALLEGRO SCORES HACK CUP TO GAY STREAK GOOD FINISH IN STEEPLES The three-year-old filly Awatea Princess finished solidly to win the Kcrepeehi Hack Handicap and return her supporters a double-figure dividend on the win machine. She was always handy to the leaders, and, after following Slam, To Poto, Raceline and To Maranui into the straight, went 011 strongly to win by a neck from Te Maranui. The last-named mado a fast run round the iicld at the home turn and failed only at the end after appearing a likely winner a furlong from home. The favourite High Sea was one of the last to leave the barrier and did not become prominent until the straight was reached, when he finished well for third, a length behind Te Maranui. Raceline was a creditable fourth and Slam weakened into fifth position. Gaiwind and Te Poto did best of the others. Tama Abbey was badly left.

Favourite Victorious

Tho each-way favourite L'Allegro was

victorious in tho Handicap Hurdles alter being a little awkwardly placed in the middle stages. Sandy Mountain, Bellbroney and Kilberis were prominent early, Bellbroney and Kilberis being the leaders past tho stands. Kilberis baulked at tne fence near the six furlongs post and Bells of Bov» then had a short turn in the lead, only to give way to Simint and Count Roussillon, who were tho leaders into the straight from Stanstead, Bellbroney and L'Allcgro Once they straightened up L'AUegro challenged on the outside and won a good race by half a length from Count Roussillon. Sirrom stayed on solidly to be a close third and Stanstead was fourth, ahead of Simint, Bellbroney, Sandy Mountain and Bells of Bow. The class was not good, but Sirrom is a likely improver. Desert Star lost his rider at the fourth fence. Having his first race, tho four-year-old Gold Vaals brought off a big surprise in winning the Trial Handicap and paying over three-quarters of a century. Gold Vaals was tho early leader, and, after following Requiem and Seven Seas into tho straight, ran on in determined fashion to score by three-quarters of a length from Land Girl, who finished fast on tho rails. Maereana, always handy, battled on solidly for third and Requiem was right up fourth. Privy Seal, Seven Seas, Barrister and Flash By were next. Disturbed whipped round and lost his chance at the start, while Aynho and Mia Fratollo were also slow away. Gold Vaals is a sturdy type with a good turn of speed. He carried only £l2 10s on the win machine. Land "Girl finished pleasingly, but Privy Seal and Requiem weakened slightly. Malagigi Defeated Capably handled by N. R. McKenzie the second fancy Gay Streak defeated the each-way favourite Malagigi in the Hack Cup Handicap. The Vamp swerved outward at the start, slightly checking Hopalong and Malagigi. However, Hopalong soon ran to the front from Ringshot and Gay Streak. Erlick ran up fast on the outside after going two furlongs and assumed command along the back, where he established i a lead of six lengths from Gay Streak, J Malagigi, The Vamp and Hopalong. j Erlick was just in front entering the straight, with Gay Streak in hot pursuit and several lengths clear of Tho Vamp and Malagigi. Below the distance Gay Streak challenged and ho ran on well to score nicely from Malagigi, who also finished strongly. Ringshot battled on to be a fair third, and Erlick, who tired quickly after being made a lot of use of, was fourth. The Vamp, Hopalong and Kena were next. The Taumarunui Cup provided a thrilling finish, and with a furlong to go seven of the eight runners were practically abreast, the exception being Master Brierly, who was in the rear throughout. Orac was the early leader and was then joined by King Rey, the pair leading in the middle stages from Bonny Gay, Day Wind, Small Boy and Mungatoon. Entering the straight Orac, Day Wind and Small Boy were in the lead from Huskie, King Rey and Mungatoon. The field spread across the course in the straight, and Mungatoon finished strongly on the inside to win narrowly from Orac, who hung on to beat Small Boy by a head. Bonny Gay was a close fourth, succeeded by King Rey, Huskie, Day Wind and Master Brierly. The run of the race favoured tho winner, who came home well after being a good way behind the leaders in the middle stages. Orac stayed on better than hitherto and ap-r pears improved. Small Boy was forced to cover a little extra ground at tho turn, but otherwise had every chance. Day Wind weakened at the end, and so did King Rey, who may be all the better for the" race. Saint Musk Prevails

The win favourite Saint Musk prevailed in good style in the Maramarua Steeplechase, which was a fine contest. Saint Musk made most of the running and commencing the last round was just in front of Mio Lume, Biform, Windsor Lad and Golden England. Biform, Saint Musk, Golden England and Mio Lume came into the straight in closo order, Saint Musk jumping the last fence well, to win nicely from Gold<;n England, who showed his first glimpse of form for some time. Biform was a close fourth, followed by Windsor Lad and London. Grantham ran off when leading at the third fence. Saint Musk was assisted to victory by his dashing jumping. Biform and Golden England pulled up very tender. It was with a good finishing effort

that Miss Lu got up to win the Flying Handicap and return her backers a solid dividend 011 the win machine. Orate, Prince Ven and Miss Lu were the first to become prominent, and they made the running to the straight, where Orate had charge from Prince Ven, Mungacre, who had run up on the outside, Miss Lu and Golden Blonde. Orate appeared a winner a short distance from the post, but Miss Lu wore him down to win by half a length. Valamito came from fairly well back to bo third half a length away, and Johnny Walls was fourth. Johnny Walls was in the rear in the early stages and finished solidly. Mungacre weakened into fifth position, and then came Golden Blonde, lmpasto, Sergia and Gay Seton.

lmpasto showed dash in the middle stages, but was well beaten at the end. May Song Wins Decisively

The second fancy May Song won the Spring Hack Handicap in very decisive fashion. Inver and May Song were quickly prominent, May Song being in front after going a furlong. Madelon then assumed the lead from Grand Score and Melvanui, who had run up smartly. Madelon and Melvanui led

into the straight from May Song, Inver and Strathire. Once in line for the post Madelon began to tire, and May Song challenged. May Song soon took the measure of Melvanui and beat him comfortably by a neck Strathire battled 011 solidly to be a close third, and Inver, who went wide round the turn, was right up fourth, ahead of Little Artist, Madelon and Hymel. May Song won with a little in hand.
