RAID UPON BEER
RAILWAY CONSIGNMENT HOLES BORED IN CASKS INCIDENT AT HASTINGS [by telegraph—owx correspondent] HASTINGS. Monday A consignment of beer was broached by an unknown person or persons when it was left in a truck in the Hastings railway yards over the week-end awaiting delivery. An examination showed that two casks had been tampered with to the extent of having holes bored in them. Beer was still oozing from the openings. The waggon floor was covered with liquid. Apparently the visitors sought to extract the beer by syphoning it, for they bored holes in the top of one cask, but all they would receive would be froth. The next barrel was opened on the side and about half the contents had disappeared. Lying near by in the waggon was an empty beer bottle and a -glass jar. At this stage the beer is not ready for consumption. "It would taste like poison," said one authority, when commenting on the incident. "I know nothing else that has such an awful taste as that beer would have. They will remember it all their lives."
