TEACHERS ABROAD
CONTINENTAL FESTIVALS MANY FIREWORKS DISPLAYS "Everywhere we went we saw fireworks," said Miss G. Ward, an Auckland school teacher, who with Miss A. M. Turner, of Papakura, returned recently from a visit abroad. Miss Ward hastened to explain that the fireworks were of the ornamental variety. Miss Ward and Miss Turner went to England primarily to see the Coronation procession, of which they had an excellent view from outside Buckingham Palace. During the six months they were away they visited Germany, arriving there in time to see the "Rhineland in Flames," an annual festival of great spectacular beauty. The Rhine was illuminated 011 both sides for a distance of 25 miles, and the fireworks displays were magnificent, Miss Ward said. She spoke very highly of the German people from all of whom, as a British visitor, slio received a very warm welcome.
Another spectacular fireworks display was 'seen by Miss Ward when she visited the Paris Exhibition, on this occasion the Eiffel Tower being tho background, for the illuminations. Beginning from tho bottom the fireworks spread to the top of the tower in magnificent sprays of light, the scene being indescribably beautiful. The third fireworks display was seen in Denmark, where the travellers arrived in time to see the midsummer night festival. Returning to London, Miss Ward and Miss Turner made a motor tour of England, covering the whole of the country from Land's End to John o' Groats. The tour was accomplished in perfect weather and tho English countryside was seen at its best.
