OBITUARY

CAPTAIN H. P. THURSTON SHAW-SAVILL COMMANDER News lias been received of the death in London of Captain H. P. Thurston, a well-known commander under the Shaw, Savill and .Albion Company's flag. Captain Thurston, entered the company's service about 2.5 years ago as a junior officer and advanced through successive grades to the rank of captain. Among the vessels Captain Thurston commanded were the Kia Ora, Matakana, Herminius, which was later renamed Waimana, Maimoa and Fordsdale. He was captain of the lonic on her last voyage to New Zealand, and when she was handed over to the shipbreakers he received command of the Karanga, m which he visited the Dominion last April. MRS. S. E. WRIGHT The death occurred recently, after a brief illness, of Mrs. Ada Wright, widow of the late Mr. S. E. Wright, formerly secretary of the Auckland Employers' Association. Prior to taking up her residence in Auckland a number of years ago, Mrs. Wright lived in Masterton and later in Napier. She was a foundation'member of the League of New Zealand Pcnwomen, and recently was made a life member. Mrs. Wright was greatly interested in art and exhibited regularly for some vears at the exhibitions of paintings held by the league. MR. JAMES SHJELS [from oua owx correspondent] HAMILTON. Monday The death, occurred yesterday of Mr. James Shiels. of Hamilton, at" the age of 8(3. Mr. Shiels came to New Zealand from Scotland 60 years ago and after his marriage to Miss Sarah, Ellen Sinclair in Auckland, he cnmc'to Hamilton, where he had resided for about 30 years. A prominent figure in social work in the Waikato, Mrs. M. A. Scott, has died at Kawhia. Mrs. Scott came to Kawhia with her husband from Canterbury forty years ago. and for some years they were the only white residents in the district. Both took a leading interest in the development of the settlement, and after Mr. Scott's death in 1922. Mrs. Scott devoted herself to social and philanthropic work. From 1920 to 19.'10 she was ;t member of the Waikato Hospital Board, and secretary to the Kawhia Medical Association. Both these bodies and the women's division of the Farmers' Union, the Kawhia Cottage Hospital and other local bodies were represented at the funeral. Mrs. Scott leaves three sons and five daughters. Monday The death is reported of Mr. David Buchanan, aged 66. of Tiakitahuna, a former president of the Manawatu Agricultural and Pastoral Association. He was a noted breeder of Ayrshire cattle and Large White pigs.
