SHEARING COSTS

Sir, —A correspondent recently stated that the cost of shearing and marketing wool from 500 sheep would be about £4O this season. In reply to, this letter, "Another Honest John" expressed some doubts on the subject. Tho following figures show bare costs of shearing and marketing wool from 600 odd sheep, clipping 81b. of wool, last season: —One shearer, 27s 100, £8 7s 6d; rations, £1; brokerage, freight and gas burning, £2l 7s lid; lorry (farm to rail), £1; benzine, packs, etc., £3 10s; owner's time, pressing, rolling, keeping sheep up to shed, etc., £5. Total last year: £4O os sd. Increased rate. 7s 100, £2 .'is 6d. Expectations of higher freight and handling costs this year. Also'it has to be remembered that rams are shorn at double rates and lambs, if shorn, will barely pay expenses. Trusting that these figures may help " Another Honest John " and others to realise that a very considerable slice is deducted from Mr. Cook's " lialf-gtiinea fleece." Fkank Duncan,. Manunui.
