AMALGAMATION ISSUE MANGONUI TRIAL VOTE OPINION EVENLY DIVIDED [by telegraph—own correspondent! KAITAIA, Wednesday To ascertain the feeling of the ratepayers on the proposals for the amalgs=,mation of local authorities, the Mangonui County Council decided to take a referendum of the voters. \\ ith this end in view full statements for and against the proposals were sent to all ratepayers, as well as a ballot paper for the ratepayer to record his or her vote ants a stamped addressed envelope in which to return the ballot paper. The returned papers were counted today by the returning officer, Mr. C. McKinnon, and his staff, the result being a tie, an equal number of votes, 227, being cast both for and against. There were 1" informal votes. Not 50 per cent of the ballot paper's were returned. This is said to be the first occasion in New Zealand .where an expression of opinion has been obtained from the ratepayers in a county as to tiieir views on the Government's proposals for the amalgamation «~»f local authorities-
