STEADY ACTIVITY LARGE TOTAL IN AUGUST NUMEROUS NEW HOMES Although slightly below the high lcvol of July the value of the building permits issued by the Auckland City Council last month, £915,264, is nearly 50 per cent above the average of the earlier months of this year. The total for August was contributed to largely by 32 now dwellings, which involved an expenditure of £38.596. In each of the months of April and July this year the value of permits has aggregated over £IOO.OOO, yet the total for the first eight months of the year. £519,027, falls short of that for the same period of last year by almost £25,000. Last year the monthly totals maintained a fairly regular average, whereas this year there have been several periods when tho expenditure :rcl! to a comparatively low level. The permits for August, which numbered 198, included internal alterations | to a city church, a new theatre and a i commercial garage, with additions to J an hotel and a factory and small additions to a library, a warehouse and a j grandstand, as well as numerous small j jobs involving additions and alterations ; to existing buildings. There wero 18 costing under £IOOO, 11 costing between £IOOO and £2OOO, one costing over £2OOO and two costing over £3OOO. So far this year 200 new dwellings have been erected in the city area. During tho same period last year 260 new dwellings were erected and 157 in 1935.
