August 31 A party "of 50 Chinese students entered the Majestic Cabaret, overlooking the racecourse, and the spokesman requested the cessation oi' dancing and merrymaking in the present time of national emergency. His harangue heartened his companions, and an attempt was made to drive out 100 people. The hostesses and waiters intervened, w h:;ch resulted in a free fight. Bottles and chairs were thrown. ; Ihe New Life Association has petitioned the authorities to close the cabarets. PACT WITH RUSSIA CHINESE ASSURANCES LONDON, August 30 The Chinese, Embassy in London, on the authority of the Nanking Government, issued a statement to-day to the effect that if Japan changes her policy, China is willing to conclude a non.aE£rcssion agreement with her similar to the Sino-Soviet pact. The state Miient describes the latter agreement as simple and entirely negnre, and merely intended to maintain __Peace by mutual assurances of nona Sgreision and non-assistance to aggrefc•rtfs.
