NEW SEASON'S BUTTER

PORT ADELAIDE LOADING PRODUCTION STARTS WELL REGULATION OF SHIPMENTS The first shipment of now season's butter received into store in Auckland since the current export season opened on August 1 will be despatched by the Port Adelaide, due to load tomorrow. This vessel will lift approximately 44,000 boxes of butter, which will be a charge on the 193;-38 Dairy Industry Account at the fixed basic price of 13Jd per lb. Owing to the fact that cheese, to mature properly, must be held in store longer than butter several weeks will elapse before new season's manufacture is exported. The first loading of cheese received into Auckland stores since August 1, and therefore paid for on shipment at the new guaranteed rate, is scheduled to be made by the Trojan Star, due to leave Auckland about the third week in September. New season's produce is now being received into the stores rapidly. The recent sunny weeks have been golden weeks in many farming districts. Water-logged pastures have dried out and the grass has made rapid growth, giving an excellent fillip to early production. So far the quantity of butter and cheese reaching store has been well on a par with last season's opening, which is considered a most encouraging start, in view of the records for output established in the past year. A considerable quantity of last season's produce has yet to bo, exported. At present it is believed that the last of the butter should be despatched by the middle of October, while the final cheese despatch wiL be a little later. This produce, its hist season's make, will be paid lor at the initial guaranteed rate. Allowing time for tho vessels to reach Loudon and the receipt of the realisations by cablegram, it appears unlikely that tho first vear's Dairy Industry Account can be ruled off and finally balanced much before December. The Minister of Marketing has indicated that the estimated deficit is approximately £050,000, but it is possible for this to be materially reduced by a period of good prices. The shipment of produce in tho latter part of the season is intentionally protracted by the marketing authorities in order to regulate supplies to tho British market and avoid gluts. All new season's butter up to tho end of November is usually shipped immediately. From December, when production is reaching its peak, a certain quantity is withhold, so that in tho autumn and winter more butter is reaching the London market than is actually being produced. This system has boon operated by the Dairy Board for some years and lias been eminently satisfactory.

THE CITY MARKETS DEMAND FOR FRUIT VEGETABLES CHEAPER There was a fair demand for good quality apples at the City Markets yesterday. Island and hothouse tomatoes also were keenly sought. The market was over&upplied with lemons, prices dropping considerably. Oranges, both South Australian and Island, were in plentiful supply. A fresh shipment of Queensland pineapples arrived yesterday by the Awatea. In the vegetable section cabbage and swedes were in very heavy supply, while caulillowers were more' plentiful, prices easing a little. There were only small quantities of pumpkins and local onions offering, and good lines realised high prices.
