LYNNDALE CLUB'S RACE ROUND-THE-HARBOUR EVENT Junior riders were again prominent in the Lyundale Club's fifth annual championship race over the round-the-harbour course of 41 miles. When L. A. Hawke, 13m, outsprinted D. Wrathall, who was on the same mark, ho repeated his success of tho 1935 race when he won from the 55m mark. For a rider of only 14J years of age he possesses remarkable stamina. Jf'lawke and Wrathall paced together throughout and the winner's time of Uh 14m was almost 23ni faster than his 1935 time. Hawke won the July open junior r&oe of 25 miles, oft' 6m, and is rapidiy gaining a reputation as a distance rider. Wrathall was second in the last open junior race, which was won by W. A. Barnett, now a senior rider. Hughes created little surprise by gaining the championship title with fastest timo in 2h 3m 265. Ho won his club's title in the 1934 race v 2h 7m 51s. C. It. Gooder, who won the 1933, 1935 and 1936 club titles, st'll retains the course record for the 41 miles of lh 56m 445. The 20 miles contest held by the Mamikau Club over its hilly course at Avondale South proved to the fastest yet decided, and to E. G. Mvnott must be given credit lor making it so fast. He outclassed the 2b starters to rapidly work his way through from the lm 30s mark, take the lead oil the final lap, and win easily by over 200 yards, from W. o\Shaughnossv, sin, whose socontl placing enabled him to win the Kolin Cup for the season with 12 points. Mynott broke three course records durin'ir his remarkable ride and won fastest tinio with 54m Os, an 8s reduction on J. Brown's 1934 record. . The junior unpaced championship was keenly Contested by 30 riders. After his outstanding efforts in recent distance races C. H. Pieknell s victory was anticipated. His time of 42 m 25s was 17s faster* than that of J. B. Johnston, who was next. Besides winning tho title Pieknell finished second on the sealed handicap, which Johnston won with an allowance of 20s. Since he won the 100 miles r.ice fast October, N. Gamble has displayed remarkable improvement and on Saturday he won the Papatoetoe Club s senior unpaced championship. Gamble was a junior when ho won the IUO miles contest, but commenced this season in the senior ranks by winning the opening race, a time trial, and tollowed up that success with two more fastest time efforts. R. A. Beehre, last vear's club champion, had the misfortune to puncture on Saturday, ihe consistent D. E. Knight finished a close second to Gamble. A. M. J. Keith confirmed Ins championship win by making fastest time in tho Northern Club's 2o miles event, whilo S. Thompson rode strongly .and unpaced for a greater portion of the course to win by nearly a minute from the improving T. Banfield. Although he again made fastest time, E. A. Lang ridge, scr, gained vcrv little ground on K. Vosper and •D. Lawrence, 3m 30s, in the lakapuna Club's annual race for the Rainger Cup. These two juniors _ combined efforts so well that Vosper s winning time was only 4bs slower than Bangridge's effort. D Ross, tho vouncest and smallest of tho Surrey Club's junior riders; secured a runaway win in the 14 miles contest, while H. Koosache, scr, again proved himself the best of the club s seniors by making fastest timo in the club record time of 39m Is. The most successful rider of the season has been J. A.- Morris, of the Beach Haven Club, who has won five events and been fastest hi six. , He secured a double victory when ho was first and fastest rider in Saturday's 20-miles race for the Ladies' Cup. He has secured the double honours on four occasions this year from the scratch mark.
