BOXING RING

CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY AUCKLAND TITLE WINNERS THE TEAM FOR GREYMOUTH The annual provincial amateur tournament conducted last week by the Auckland Boxing Association must rank as one of the most successful in its history. Preliminary contests which had taken place in conjunction with professional bouts for some months before the tourney made it apparent that the standard would bo high and the boxers well fulfilled that prediction. It only remained for the various officials to work harmoniously under the guidance of the president, Mr. Neil McLean, and that they did so was amply in evidence throughout the three nights over which the carnival was spread. The following team will represent Auckland at the New Zealand championships at Greymouth next week:— M. McHugli, heavy-weight; 11. Branch, middle-weight; E. Estall, welterweight; P. Kelly, light-weight; K. Moran, feather-weight; S. Stock, ban-tam-weight; H. Sheridan, fly-weight. In addition to the foregoing W. Purdy, welter-weight, and B. McKay, feather-weight, have been nominated by the Waikato Association, each having been successful in his class at that body's championships. GENEROUS SUPPORTERS ADDITIONS MADE TO TEAM The original selection was five and did not include Branch and Stock, who won in their divisions at the Auckland championships. However, a subscription iist was sent among members of the Auckland Boxing Association committee and people closely associated with the administrative side of boxing and, within a very short time, the amount necessary to send Branch to the championships was subscribed. A novice as regards the number of contests in which he has competed, Branch appears to be one of the most promising middle-weights produced in Auckland for some time. He left Takapuna Grammar School at the end of last year, having been champion for two seasons. Stock's friends have arranged sufficient expenses for him to bo included with the team. TRAINERS' APPRECIATION PRESENTATION TO OFFICER. At the conclusion of the tournament there was a happy gathering in the trliners' room, when Mr. V. Hogg, on behalf of the trainers, expressed their appreciation of the valuable assistance they had received from the association's honorary custodian, Mr. T. Harper. Ho said nothing liacl been too much trouble to Mr. Harper in the matter of providing equipment for both trainers and boxers. Mr. Harper's health was drunk with enthusiasm and in reply he said his work had been considerably lightened by the hearty co-operation he had received from all the trainers. Messrs. E. Donovan and F. Pearcey were congratulated upon sharing the honour of holding the Kohn Cup for the ensuing year. Each produced two champions and will have possession of the trophy for a period of six months. Mr. Donovan announced that he would now retire from training, whereupon his colleagues remarked that lie had a record second to 110 trainer in New Zealand and that his less in this respect would be a severe ono. An officer to whom the association is much indebted is Dr. -J. D. C. 1 Mackv, who gives a great deal of his time to the sport, more particularly by attending at personal inconvenience at the Town Hall to the weighing and examination of competitors. In recognition of his services in this respect, officials of the association gathered in the committee room at the end of the championship tournament last Wednesday night for the purpose of making him a presentation. This took the form of a fountain pen and pencil, suitably inscribed, and was handed to Dr. Mackv by Mr. N. C. McLean, president of the Auckland Boxing Association, who passed somo highly complimentary remarks regarding the recipient.
