RULES OF BANK
METHODS IN EARLY DAYS An advertisement of the opening of the Auckland branch of the Union Hank, published in the New Zealand er newspaper of January 7, 1848, roads rather strangely to-day. It is headed: "Union Bank of Australia. Auckland Branch. Rides and Regulations." A scries of rides to be observed by clients is then set out. One of them leads: "All cheques must he drawn payahlc to or Bearer (not to order), and it is particularly requested that no cheques be drawn for sums under £5 (five pounds)." Another rule regarding bills left for collection states that the" bank will not be responsible for giving notice of dishonour to intermediate Tndorsers. The announcement that ibo branch will be opened appears nearly at the end of the advertisement, instead of at the beginning, as might bo expected.
