BOOKS FOR SETTLERS

WELCOME DONATIONS VICTORIA LEAGUE WORK The sending of parcels of books, papers and magazines to residents and their children in the back blocks, which is one of the most important activities of the Victoria League, was materially assisted yesterday when a book afternoon was held. There was a very large attendance of members, all of whom brought gifts of books, papers and magnifies to swell the number already in hand. In the Lard-bound book section 295 were received yesterday afternoon, these including a substantial parcel from the Thames Girls' Club. Pupils from the Epsom Girls' Grammar School sent in over 250 beautifullymade scrap books. Last year 175 i books, 1318 magazines, 1327 papers and 81 scrap books were sent to settlers, while 1179 books, 456 magazines, 702 papers and 150 scrap books were sent to schools for distribution among the children. Tho guests were received yesterday by the president of the league. Miss J. A. Mowbray, who thanked them for their gifts and told of the •pleasure the books gafe to the backblocks residents. A brief musical programme was arranged by Mrs. Humfrey Gordon. It comprised songs by Miss Phyllis Rentier and Mrs. Gordon, and pianoforte solos by Mrs. Reginald Reed. Competitions were won by Mrs. L. Dimery and Mrs. J. H. Sherwin. The hostesses were j\lrs. J. Graham, Mrs. Gilford, Mrs. H. W. -Jessop. Misses K. and !E. Keesing and Miss E. Walker.
