COMMISSIONER OF TAXES RETIREMENT FROM SERVICE [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] WELLINGTON, Tuesday Complimentary references to the service of Mr. C. E. Dowland, Commissioner of Taxes, Were made by the Minister of Finance, the ■ Hon. W. Nash, Mr. J. M. Park, deputy-Commis-sioner of Taxes, and Mr. H. H. Young, chief clerk of the Taxation Deparfc-
ment, at a departmental farewell to the commissioner to-day. Mr. Dti'wland, after 40 years in tho Public Service, will retire shortly on superannuation. He lias been commissioner for tho last; five years. There were more thau 350 officers and employees of the department present at the function, and following the speeches by Mr. Nash and Mr. Park, the former presented a cheque to Mr. Dowland.
