EFFICIENCY PLAN
REJECTION BY BAKEES OPPOSED TO ANY SCHEME THE AUCKLAND VIEWPOINT With only one dissentient voice tlio Auckland Master Bakers' Association decided at a special meeting on Saturday night to reject the proposal to place the baking industry within the scope of an efficiency plan. The meeting was attended by bakers from all parts of the province. Tlio following motion was carried: — " Having considered the proposed plnn submitted by the New Zealand executive to the trade, the members of the Auckland Master Bakers' Association unhesitatingly reject this plan, and oppose any plan or scheme that will bring the baking industry under the provisions of the Industrial Efficiency Act." Toward the end of June the executive of the New Zealand Master Bakers and Pastrycooks' Association forwarded to its various affiliations copies of a. new efficiency scheme that was very far-reaching in its scope. Briefly, it set out to encourage amalgamation and consolidation in districts where inefficiency or high costs could bo shown to bo due to an excessive number of units of production or distribution. Among other things a committee would be empowered to purchase businesses and dispose of the assets, provided it could be shown that this would bring a saving of not less than 4d on a 21b. loaf, on production cost, or $d on the cost of delivery. It was proposed also to refuse a licence to inefficient or redundant units, to define delivery regions, and to devote any part of benefits which accrued toward the improvement of wheat, flour and bread.
