OBITUARY
MR. G. M. PRENDERGAST AGED VICTORIAN POLITICIAN (Received August 29, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, August 29 The death is announced of Mr. George Michael Prendergast, "father" of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, aged 83. Mr. Prendergast was a member of the first Labour Government in Victoria —the short-lived Elmslie Ministry of 1913. He was born at Adelaide and was a printer by trade, and worked as a compositor in Sydney .and elsewhere until his election to the Legis-
lative Assembly in 1894, as member for North Melbourne. He was defeated in 1897, but regained the seat in 1900, and held it until its abolition. Later, Mr. Prendergast was member for Footscray. Ho was Chief Secretary in the Elmslie Ministry and Premier for a short term in 1924. He was for some time Leader of the Labour Opposition. ;
